Blue Ridge and Ellijay in north Georgia are known as the "Trout Fishing Capital" of the Southeast and you will find some 4,000 miles of streams designated by the Georgia DNR as trout streams. North Georgia is a trout fisherman's paradise bur requires a little local knowledge to actually find fish.

trout Fishing in North Georgia Unfortunately, you will find much of that access limited due to the amount of private property along the rivers and creeks. The DNR considers all streams, even very small creeks, to be trout waters even if they are too small to support fish. Any pollutants put into a small stream will eventually end up in one of the larger trout streams.

Next you have to consider whether the streams are stocked versus wild populations. The state has a regular stocking program on several of the larger creeks and rivers in areas open to public access. Native fish can be found in the USFS and Wilderness areas but take a considerable amount of work to fish. Public fishing pressure and crowds in the state stocked areas should be considered when planning your trip.

It is very difficult to sustain a trophy trout fishery in public access areas due to fishing pressure and bag limits. Many of our local guide services have arrangements with local land owners, and can limit access to the streams to paying guests. The land owners privately stock the stream and the guides pay the land owners a rod fee for each fisherman they bring to the property. The land owner feeds the fish, keeps a vigilant eye out for poachers and other predators. These streams are catch and release only with careful handling of the fish to be released.
